This study isolated nine chemical compounds from Berchemia lineata root, including a new chromone derivative and several known flavonoids. These findings expand the phytochemical knowledge of this plant species.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Pharmacognosy
Background:
- Berchemia lineata (L.) DC. is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
- Understanding its chemical constituents is crucial for exploring its pharmacological applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and identify the chemical constituents from the root of Berchemia lineata.
- To characterize novel compounds and known compounds previously unrecorded in this plant.
Main Methods:
- Extraction of Berchemia lineata root using ethyl acetate.
- Purification using silica gel and RP-C18 silica gel column chromatography.
- Structure elucidation via spectroscopic analysis and preparative High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
Main Results:
- Nine compounds were isolated: 5-hydroxy-7-(2'-hydroxypropyl)-2-methyl-chromone (1), a new chromone derivative (-)-(1'R, 2'S)-erythro-5-hydroxy-7-(1', 2'-dihydroxypropyl)-2-methyl-chromone (2), and known flavonoids naringenin (3), eriodictyol (4), (+)-aromadendrin (5), (+)-taxifolin (6), (+)-catechin (7), (+)-epigallocatechin (8), and quercetin (9).
- Compound 2 represents a novel chromone derivative.
- Compound 1, a known chromone, is reported from this genus for the first time.
- Compounds 3-9, known flavonoids, are isolated from this plant for the first time.
Conclusions:
- The phytochemical investigation of Berchemia lineata root has led to the identification of nine compounds, including one new chromone derivative.
- This study contributes new chemical data on Berchemia lineata, with several compounds being reported for the first time in this species.
- The identified compounds, particularly flavonoids and chromones, warrant further investigation for their potential biological activities.

Aromatic ring substitutions: Substituting the aromatic ring with –OH groups at positions 3 and 4 yields catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine), which have a high affinity for adrenoceptors. Hydrogen bonding between –OH groups and receptors enhances adrenergic activity.
