Fracture matching is a key forensic technique for rigid materials.
Limited research exists on the fracture matching of polymeric films like tape backings.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the validity and error rate of end-match (fracture match) examinations on vinyl electrical tape.
To assess the influence of various factors on the reliability of tape end-match analysis.

Main Methods:

Vinyl electrical tape samples were prepared using varied source rolls, preparers, and separation methods.
Analysts examined the severed tape ends for end-match (fracture match) characteristics.
The study controlled for variables including tape source, preparation method, and analyst interpretation.

The source roll, test preparer, and mode of separation significantly affected the severed tape ends.
Analyst interpretation also influenced the identification of end matches.
