Background:

US News & World Report is the sole media outlet ranking Physician Assistant (PA) programs.
The 2007 US News ranking relied on subjective surveys of PA school faculty and administration.
A need exists for a more objective and data-driven approach to ranking PA programs.

Purpose of the Study:

To introduce a novel, objective methodology for ranking graduate Physician Assistant (PA) programs.
To establish a new standard for evaluating PA educational quality beyond subjective media rankings.

Main Methods:

The study ranked 73 PA programs previously included in the 2007 US News ranking.
Ranking criteria included ARC-PA accreditation length, student-to-faculty ratio, doctoral faculty percentage, and 5-year average PANCE pass rates.

Main Results:

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Oregon Health & Science University, and University of Iowa were the top three ranked schools.
A weak-positive correlation was found between the new standardized rankings and the 2007 US News rankings (r = 0.40, r = 0.41).

Conclusions:

The developed objective ranking system provides a foundation for future improvements in PA program evaluation.
This novel approach offers a more robust and evidence-based method for ranking PA programs.
