Color Vision

Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Summary

  • Spectrophotometric measurement of natural tooth color (L*, a*, b*, chroma, hue) in 174 patients (2067 teeth).

  • 47% of natural teeth achieved their best match with intermediate value and chroma tabs.

Conclusions:

  • The use of intermediate value and chroma shade tabs did not enhance shade matching accuracy or coverage error.
  • Younger age groups demonstrated better shade matching performance than older groups.
  • Manual shade guide systems may have inherent limitations in achieving precise shade matches across diverse populations.
