[Surgical correction of ambiguous genitalia]
1Divisione di Urologia Pediatrica, Ospedale Infantile Regina Margherita, Torino.
Abstract:
Surgical techniques for male reconstruction of ambiguous genitalia are the same used for treatment of severe hypospadias, preceded, if necessary, by hormonal stimulation for penile growth. To obtain female reconstruction, many techniques concerning both clitoroplasty and vaginoplasty, have been proposed. Not all treatments get satisfactory functional and aesthetic results. We describe a technique, which can be followed whenever vagina ends up distally to urethral sphincter and includes useful peculiarities of techniques described by some Authors. This operation allows in one time precocious correction of genital malformation; in the 10 patients we treated, good aesthetic and functional results were obtained.
