Aromatic Hydrocarbon Cations: Structural Overview

Cycloheptatriene is a neutral monocyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon that consists of an odd number of carbon atoms and an intervening sp3 carbon in the ring. The three double bonds in the ring correspond to 6 π electrons, which is a Huckel number, and therefore satisfies the criteria of 4n + 2 π electrons. However, the intervening sp3 carbon disrupts the continuous overlap of p orbitals. As a result, cycloheptatriene is not aromatic.

Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • Zygophyllum eurypterum is a plant species known for its potential medicinal properties.
  • Triterpenoids are a diverse class of natural products with a wide range of biological activities.
  • Isolation and structural elucidation of new compounds contribute to understanding plant chemical diversity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize novel triterpenoids from Zygophyllum eurypterum.
  • To determine the chemical structures of the isolated compounds using spectroscopic methods.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction of the whole plant of Zygophyllum eurypterum using n-butanol.
  • Purification of compounds from the extract.
  • Structure elucidation using various spectroscopic techniques: EI-MS, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 2D-NMR (HMQC, HMBC, COSY, NOESY).

Main Results:

  • Two new triterpenoids, named atriplicoide A and atriplicoide B, were successfully isolated.
  • The structure of atriplicoide A was determined as 30-carboxy-3beta,24-dihydroxy-urs-28,13beta-lactam-N-acetate.
  • The structure of atriplicoide B was determined as 3beta,24-dihydroxyursan-28,13beta-olide.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified and characterized two new triterpenoids from Zygophyllum eurypterum.
  • The findings contribute to the phytochemical knowledge of the Zygophyllum genus.
  • The detailed structural information provides a basis for further investigation into the biological activities of these compounds.
