Background:

The National Mental Health Benchmarking Project (NMHBP) established forums for forensic mental health organizations.
These forums aimed to facilitate peer comparison of performance using key performance indicators (KPIs).

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the forensic mental health benchmarking forums conducted under the NMHBP.
To encourage participating organizations to compare their performance against peers using established KPIs.

Main Methods:

Four forensic mental health organizations participated in eight benchmarking forums.
Participants documented performance against agreed KPIs and conducted three special projects to explore performance variations.

Main Results:

Substantial inter-organizational variation was observed across numerous performance indicators.
Special projects identified factors influencing variability, including seclusion practices, community mental health service delivery, and court liaison services.
Participants gained insights into counterpart practices and structures, informing quality improvement efforts.

Conclusions:

Benchmarking forums in forensic mental health are feasible.
Benchmarking holds potential for enhancing service performance and quality within forensic mental health settings.
