Summary

This study reports a rare case of an extrapulmonary hamartoma, a benign tumor found outside the lung's visceral pleura. Surgical resection was successfully performed for this chondromatous tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Hamartomas are rare benign tumors, typically found within the lung parenchyma.
  • Extrapulmonary locations are exceptionally uncommon, posing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old male presented with a subpleural tumor in the right lung apex.
  • Video-assisted thoracic surgery was performed for diagnosis and resection.
  • Thoracoscopy revealed a chondromatous tumor in the extrapleural space.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a hamartoma.
  • The tumor was located outside the visceral pleura, classifying it as extrapulmonary.
  • Surgical resection was completed without complications.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of rare extrapulmonary hamartoma presentations.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in thoracic oncology.
  • Demonstrates the efficacy of minimally invasive surgery for such lesions.
