Area of Science:

  • * Physics, Materials Science, Optics

Background:

  • * One-dimensional photonic crystals with alternating positive and negative index layers can exhibit a photonic band gap.
  • * This band gap is insensitive to period scaling when the volume average refractive index approaches zero.
  • * Defect modes can exist within this zero-average index band gap without breaking lattice symmetry.

Purpose of the Study:

  • * To investigate the impact of index dispersion on the properties of zero-average index photonic crystals.
  • * To explore self-collimation and focusing phenomena in these metamaterials.
  • * To explain beam shaping using a beam propagation model.

Main Methods:

  • * Theoretical analysis of one-dimensional photonic crystals with positive and negative index layers.
  • * Introduction of index dispersion to study its effect on resonant frequencies.
