Summary
This study shows that the Self-Management Internet-Based Program for Older Adults with Overactive Bladder (OAB-SMIP) is usable and effective. Older adults with overactive bladder experienced improved knowledge, symptoms, and quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Urology
- Digital Health
Background:
- Overactive bladder (OAB) significantly impacts the quality of life for older adults.
- Effective, accessible self-management strategies are needed for this demographic.
Purpose of the Study:
- To pilot test the Self-Management Internet-Based Program for Older Adults with Overactive Bladder (OAB-SMIP).
- To evaluate the usability and outcomes of OAB-SMIP in older adults with OAB.
- To assess changes in knowledge, self-efficacy, bladder condition perception, and quality of life.
Main Methods:
- A single-group study design with pre- and post-tests was employed.
- 25 participants aged 55+ with OAB symptoms were recruited.
- The 6-week intervention included e-learning tutorials, social networking, and online resources.
Main Results:
- Participants found OAB-SMIP easy to use and enjoyable.
- Significant improvements were observed in OAB knowledge (large effect size) and symptoms (large effect size).
- Participants showed enhanced self-efficacy (overall, for pelvic exercises, and urge control) and improved health-related quality of life.
Conclusions:
- The OAB-SMIP effectively improved knowledge and OAB symptom management in older adults.
- Participants demonstrated increased self-efficacy and better health-related quality of life after using the program.
