Abstract

Insights

Telmisartan, an angiotensin receptor antagonist, demonstrated antidiabetic and antioxidant effects in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. It improved glycemic control and restored tissue antioxidant enzymes, suggesting potential for treating diabetes and its complications.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Pharmacology
  • Diabetology

Background:

  • Oxidative stress contributes to diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy.
  • Angiotensin II plays a role in diabetic complications.
  • Angiotensin receptor antagonists may offer protective effects similar to ACE inhibitors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the antidiabetic and tissue antioxidant effects of Telmisartan.
  • To compare Telmisartan's effects with Gliclazide in a rat model of diabetes.

Main Methods:

  • 40 rats were divided into control, diabetic, and treatment groups.
  • Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (STZ).
  • Groups received distilled water, STZ, STZ + Telmisartan, or STZ + Gliclazide.

Main Results:

  • Diabetic rats exhibited increased TBARs and decreased GSH and SOD.
  • Telmisartan and Gliclazide improved serum glucose, Hb, and HbA1c.
  • Both treatments restored tissue GSH and SOD levels while reducing TBARs.

Conclusions:

  • Telmisartan shows potential as an antidiabetic agent.
  • Its antioxidant properties may help manage diabetes complications.
  • Telmisartan offers an alternative to Gliclazide, considering Gliclazide's limitations.
