Joints form during embryonic development in conjunction with the formation and growth of the associated bones. The embryonic tissue that gives rise to all bones, cartilage, and connective tissues of the body is called mesenchyme.

Summary

This study reports two pediatric cases of soft tissue chondroma, a rare cartilaginous tumor. Complete surgical excision is recommended to prevent recurrence of this benign tumor.

Background:

  • Soft tissue chondroma is a rare benign tumor typically affecting adults, characterized by heterotopic cartilaginous tissue, often on extremities.
  • The etiology of soft tissue chondroma, particularly the role of microtrauma, remains unsupported by evidence.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric cases of soft tissue chondroma are presented: one in a 3-year-old boy's axilla and another in a 9-year-old girl's finger.
  • Imaging revealed distinct characteristics: the axillary tumor was a fatty density mass on CT, while the digital tumor showed calcifications and bone scalloping on radiographs and was a lobulated mass on MRI.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed cartilaginous tissue in both pediatric soft tissue chondroma cases.
  • Both patients achieved good functional outcomes post-excision with no signs of recurrence.

Implications:

  • Simple excision is an effective treatment for soft tissue chondroma.
  • Complete tumor removal is crucial to avoid recurrence of soft tissue chondroma.
