    Area of Science:

    • Hepatobiliary Medicine
    • Parasitology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Opisthorchiasis is a parasitic disease caused by liver flukes.
    • Primary hepatic carcinoma is a significant global health concern.
    • The association between liver fluke infections and liver cancer requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and histological types of primary hepatic carcinoma in patients with opisthorchiasis.
    • To analyze the metastatic patterns of these liver cancers.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 87 cases of primary hepatic carcinoma associated with opisthorchiasis.
    • Histological classification of tumors.
    • Analysis of metastasis data.

    Main Results:

    • A prevalence of 56.6% for liver carcinoma was found among 154 cases of liver fluke infection.
    • Cholangiocarcinoma accounted for 77% of the tumors.
    • Metastases were observed in 71 cases, frequently involving regional lymph nodes and lungs.

    Conclusions:

    • Opisthorchiasis is strongly associated with the development of primary hepatic carcinoma, particularly cholangiocarcinoma.
    • Liver fluke infection is a significant risk factor for liver cancer.
    • Understanding this association is crucial for public health interventions in endemic areas.
