Immunocompromised patients with Staphylococcus aureus sepsis have a higher incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and treatment failure. Early treatment with MRSA-effective antibiotics is crucial for these patients.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Clinical Microbiology
- Immunology
Background:
- Staphylococcal sepsis poses a significant threat, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.
- Understanding the clinical and biological differences between immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients with staphylococcal sepsis is essential for effective management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the clinical and biological characteristics of immunocompromised patients diagnosed with staphylococcal sepsis.
- To compare these characteristics with those of non-immunocompromised patients suffering from staphylococcal sepsis.
Main Methods:
- Sepsis diagnosis was established using the established Bone criteria.
- Staphylococcus aureus identification was performed using the MiniAPI system ID 32 STAPH.
- Antibiotic susceptibility testing included ATB STAPH, E-test for oxacillin, and vancomycin.
Main Results:
- Out of 147 patients with Staphylococcus aureus sepsis, 66.67% had concurrent immunosuppressive conditions.
- A significant correlation was observed between immunosuppressed status and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) involvement (p = 0.0018).
- Immunosuppressed patients also showed a significant association with treatment failure (p = 0.0012).
Conclusions:
- The high prevalence of MRSA in systemic infections among immunocompromised patients in Eastern Romania necessitates specific treatment considerations.
- Initial treatment for staphylococcal infections in immunocompromised individuals should incorporate antibiotics effective against MRSA strains.
