Urodynamic Studies: Uroflowmetry01:19

Urodynamic Studies: Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive urodynamic test designed to measure various aspects of urination, including volume, flow rate, and the time to void. This test is crucial for diagnosing and assessing conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction, bladder dysfunction, incomplete bladder emptying, incontinence, and urinary tract blockages caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urethral strictures.Pre-Test Instructions:Before a uroflowmetry test, patients are typically advised to drink...
Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...
Sex Linked Disorders01:43

Sex Linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...
Amebiasis01:28

Amebiasis

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, is responsible for intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. Though a significant proportion of infections remain asymptomatic, approximately 50 million individuals annually are estimated to present with clinical disease, resulting in up to 100,000 deaths globally. The disease burden is disproportionately high in regions with lower socioeconomic status, such as parts of India, Africa, Mexico, and Latin America.Etiology and TransmissionThe infective...

Summary

Endourological procedures can cause temporary sexual dysfunction in men, affecting erectile function and satisfaction. However, sexual function fully recovers within three months post-procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Surgical Outcomes

Background:

  • Endourological procedures are common for treating urinary tract conditions.
  • Postoperative sexual dysfunction is a potential concern for patients undergoing these interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between endourological interventions and postoperative sexual dysfunction.
  • To assess the impact of these procedures on various aspects of male sexual function.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 50 men undergoing endourological procedures.
  • International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire used pre-procedure and at 1-3 months post-procedure.
  • Analysis of sexual function changes in relation to procedure type, stenting, and patient factors.

Main Results:

  • Significant decrease in erectile function, intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, sexual desire, and overall satisfaction at 1 month post-procedure.
  • Dysfunction was not linked to age, comorbidities, smoking, stenting, procedure type, or operative duration.
  • Full recovery of sexual function observed within 3 months.

Conclusions:

  • Endourological procedures are associated with temporary postoperative sexual dysfunction.
  • Sexual function returns to baseline within 3 months.
  • Postoperative stenting did not significantly impact sexual function, but findings aid patient counseling.
