[Development of local health systems and vaccine coverage in Dominican Republic]

The devastation of the health services system caused by Hurricane David in 1979 generated the necessary impetus for reorganizing and developing local health systems in Dominica. The process of health services decentralization, as illustrated by the vaccination program, is analyzed briefly. In general, the vaccination programs are organized vertically. This study shows that greater coverage can be achieved by total decentralization of the programs.
