Ultrastructural fiber typing of human abdominal muscles obliquus internus and obliquus externus
1Instituto de Medicina Experimental, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas.
Abstract:
In order to study their muscle fiber types biopsies from obliquus internus (OI) and obliquus externus (OE) were studied by means of electron microscopy. Biopsies were obtained surgically during lumbotomies made for urological reasons. Using ultrastructural criteria OI fibers were classified as Type I (18%), Type IIa (61%), and Type IIb (21%); OE fibers were Type I (24%), Type IIa (53%), and Type IIb (23%). The relationships between these results and others obtained with histochemical methods are discussed.
