Background:

  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing concern in aging populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between thyroid function and NAFLD in euthyroid elderly Chinese individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study included 878 euthyroid elderly Chinese participants.
  • NAFLD diagnosis was based on established criteria.
  • Thyroid function, specifically serum-free thyroxine (FT4), was measured.

Main Results:

  • 25.85% of participants had NAFLD.
  • NAFLD patients exhibited significantly lower serum FT4 levels compared to controls (P < 0.001).
  • NAFLD prevalence decreased with increasing serum FT4 levels (P for trend < 0.001).
  • Serum FT4 was negatively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, triglycerides, and uric acid.
  • Lower serum FT4 levels were significantly associated with an increased risk of NAFLD (OR: 0.847, P = 0.013).

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid function, even within the normal reference range, is associated with NAFLD in elderly Chinese.
  • Subtle variations in thyroid hormones may play a role in NAFLD development in this demographic.
