Summary

This is the first reported case of a feline choroidal melanocytoma, a rare intraocular tumor. The tumor was diagnosed in an 11-year-old cat and showed no signs of malignancy.

Background:

  • Intraocular tumors are uncommon in feline patients.
  • Choroidal melanocytic tumors, or melanocytomas, are rare neoplasms.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old European cat presented with anisocoria and a retrolental mass with retinal detachment.
  • Ophthalmic examination revealed a darkly pigmented mass and ultrasonography confirmed vitreous protrusion and retinal detachment.

Findings:

  • Orbital exenteration allowed for diagnosis of a choroidal melanocytoma with no malignant criteria.
  • The cat later died of unrelated renal lymphoma, with no detected metastasis of the melanocytoma.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of feline choroidal melanocytoma.
