Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of continuous versus intermittent low-level toluene exposure on factory workers.
  • To assess potential neurotoxic and hematological impacts.
  • To examine the relationship between toluene exposure and autonomic nervous system function.

Main Methods:

  • Urine samples collected from 34 male factory workers (Taiwan) after work hiatus and end of week.
  • Urinary hippuric acid measured via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Neurotoxic symptoms assessed via questionnaires, neuropsychiatric tests, and nerve function tests; complete blood work performed.

Main Results:

  • Increased urinary hippuric acid levels at end of workweek (p < 0.01).
  • Higher odds of sympathetic and peripheral nerve impairment in continuously exposed workers (OR=4.13, OR=6.94).
  • Continuously exposed workers showed lower mean platelet counts (p=0.018) and a positive correlation between neurological abnormalities and self-reported symptoms (r=0.35-0.66).

Conclusions:

  • Continuous low-level toluene exposure may be linked to sympathetic and peripheral nerve dysfunction.
  • Sub-clinical hematological damage, specifically reduced platelet counts, is associated with continuous exposure.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the long-term effects of chronic low-level toluene exposure on workers' health.
