Background:

Inappropriate sexual behavior (ISB) is a significant concern in geriatric care.
Etiologies and effective treatments for ISB in the elderly are not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the phenomenology of ISB in geriatric patients.
To identify factors contributing to ISB.
To review the efficacy of interventions for ISB.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of geriatric psychiatry inpatients with ISB versus matched controls.
Analysis of demographic, clinical, and cognitive variables.
Review of intervention effectiveness, adverse effects, and discontinuation rates.

Main Results:

A history of right frontal lobe stroke was significantly associated with ISB.
Cognitive testing performance and dementia presence were significant factors.
Medroxyprogesterone acetate was effective and well-tolerated in all cases used.

Conclusions:

ISB in geriatric populations is associated with right frontal lobe stroke and dementia severity.
Pharmacologic interventions, including medroxyprogesterone acetate, show potential for managing ISB.
