Background:

The efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy for complicated appendicitis remains debated.
This study evaluates the laparoscopic approach versus open surgery for complicated cases.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effectiveness and safety of laparoscopic appendectomy in managing complicated appendicitis.
To compare outcomes between laparoscopic and open appendectomy for complicated appendicitis.

Main Methods:

Retrospective study of 194 patients with complicated appendicitis from January 2003 to October 2008.
121 patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy; 73 underwent conventional open surgery.

Average hospital stay was 5.7 days.
Overall post-operative complications occurred in 9.1% of patients.
Specific complications included intra-abdominal abscess (2.5%), wound infection (1.6%), and prolonged ileus (4.9%).
