Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neurologic consequences of electrical injuries.
  • To clarify the incidence, severity, and sequelae of neurologic damage in patients with electrical injuries.

  • Retrospective chart review of 90 consecutive patients admitted to the University of Washington Burn Center from 1980 to 1986.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, injury characteristics (voltage, total body surface area), and neurologic outcomes.

  • High-voltage injuries (64 patients) frequently caused immediate central and peripheral neurologic symptoms (67%), including loss of consciousness (45%).
  • Low-voltage injuries (22 patients) had a 50% incidence of immediate neurologic symptoms, mostly resolving.
  • Peripheral neuropathies, both acute and delayed, were observed, with a significant percentage showing resolution or improvement.

Conclusions:

  • High-voltage electrical injuries are associated with a high rate of immediate central and peripheral neurologic symptoms.
  • While many neurologic symptoms resolve or improve, delayed neuropathies can occur.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term neurologic sequelae of electrical injuries.
