Summary

Radiofrequency hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy (HCR therapy) showed a 61.1% efficacy in treating inoperable cancers. Higher temperatures (≥43°C) improved treatment outcomes, suggesting HCR therapy is a viable option.

Background:

  • Inoperable head, neck, and upper chest wall cancers present significant treatment challenges.
  • Combining therapies is crucial for improving outcomes in advanced malignancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency hyperthermia in combination with chemotherapy and radiotherapy (HCR therapy).
  • To assess the impact of intratumoral temperature on treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen patients with inoperable cancers received HCR therapy.
  • Maximal intratumoral temperatures were monitored and correlated with response.
  • Adverse events, such as heat burns, were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Overall efficacy (%CR+PR) was 61.1% (3 complete responses, 8 partial responses).
  • Efficacy was significantly higher (71%) when maximal intratumoral temperature reached ≥43°C compared to <43°C (25%).
  • Eight patients experienced heat burns, all resolved with conservative therapy.

Conclusions:

  • HCR therapy demonstrates potential utility in treating inoperable superficial malignant tumors.
  • Achieving higher intratumoral temperatures is associated with improved treatment efficacy.
  • HCR therapy is generally well-tolerated, with skin burns being manageable.
