2,4-Dichloro-N-(4-methyl-phen-yl)benzene-sulfonamide
Abstract:
The title compound, C(13)H(11)Cl(2)NO(2)S, crystallizes with four independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. In each of the four mol-ecules, the conformation of the N-C bond in the C-SO(2)-NH-C segment is gauche with respect to both S=O bonds. The mol-ecules are twisted at the S-N bonds with C-SO(2)-NH-C torsion angles of 60.6 (4), -59.7 (3), 63.9 (4) and 53.0 (4)°. The benzene rings in two of the mol-ecules are disordered with multiple positions resolved in each case. The crystal structure features inversion dimers linked by pairs of N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds for each of the four molecules.

Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with Multiple Substituents
For disubstituted benzene derivatives, with two groups attached to the benzene ring, three constitutional isomers are possible. For example, consider dimethyl benzene, often called xylene, where the second methyl group can be substituted at the second, third, or fourth carbon. The relative position of the substituents is represented by prefixes ortho, meta, or...
