Summary
We developed a novel photonic-crystal fiber for high-power lasers. This fiber achieved 303 W of average power with excellent beam quality, advancing fiber laser technology.
Area of Science:
- Optics and Photonics
- Laser Physics
- Materials Science
Background:
- Photonic-crystal fibers (PCFs) offer unique light-guiding properties.
- Controlling doping profiles in PCFs is crucial for optimizing laser performance.
- Few-mode fibers are essential for high-power fiber laser systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and experimentally investigate a novel preferential gain PCF.
- To promote fundamental mode operation in a few-mode fiber.
- To evaluate the performance of the PCF in a high-power amplification system.
Main Methods:
- Design of a PCF with a 47 µm mode-field diameter.
- Confined doping of Ytterbium ions to the core center.
- Integration into a chirped-pulse amplification system.
Main Results:
- Achieved 303 W of average output power.
- Measured M2 value of 1.4, indicating good beam quality.
- Demonstrated preferential gain and fundamental mode operation.
Conclusions:
- The designed PCF enables high-power, high-beam-quality laser output.
- Confined doping is an effective strategy for fundamental mode operation in few-mode PCFs.
- This work contributes to the development of advanced fiber laser sources.
