Summary

Occupational exposures to coal dust, and long-held jobs as a carpenter or machinist, may increase the risk of developing multiple myeloma (MM). A family history of cancer also elevates MM risk in Canadian men.

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a cancer of plasma cells.
  • Identifying occupational risk factors for MM is crucial for prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate occupational exposures linked to the incidence of multiple myeloma (MM) in Canadian men.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based case-control study design was employed.
  • Data included 342 MM cases and 1506 controls.
  • Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to determine odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CI).

Main Results:

  • Exposure to coal dust was associated with an increased MM incidence (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2-2.4).
  • Long-term occupations as a carpenter (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.4-7.1) or machinist (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.0-5.8) showed significantly higher MM risk.
  • A family history of cancer was also linked to increased MM risk (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.8).

Conclusions:

  • Coal dust exposure, prolonged work as a carpenter or machinist, and a family history of cancer may elevate the risk of multiple myeloma in men.
  • These findings highlight specific occupational and familial factors contributing to MM incidence.
