A novel macrocyclic diamide was developed as a strontium ion carrier for PVC membrane electrodes. This sensor shows excellent Nernstian response, low detection limits, and good selectivity for strontium detection.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Electrochemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Macrocyclic compounds are crucial for ion recognition.
- PVC membrane electrodes are widely used for ion sensing.
- Strontium ion detection is important in various environmental and biological applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel macrocyclic diamides as ion carriers.
- To develop a selective and sensitive PVC membrane electrode for strontium ion detection.
- To evaluate the performance and stability of the developed strontium sensor.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of eight macrocyclic diamides.
- Fabrication and electrochemical characterization of PVC membrane electrodes.
- Potentiometric measurements to determine Nernstian response, limit of detection, and selectivity.
- Long-term stability tests and application in potentiometric titration.
Main Results:
- One macrocyclic diamide, 1,13-diaza-2,3;11,12-dibenzo-4,7,10-trioxacyclopentadecane-14,15-dione, showed excellent performance.
- The electrode exhibited a wide linear concentration range (1.0 × 10(-)(1) to 3.2 × 10(-)(5) M) with a low limit of detection (8.0 × 10(-)(6) M).
- The sensor demonstrated a fast response time (∼10 s), good selectivity over various ions, and stability for over three months.
Conclusions:
- The synthesized macrocyclic diamide is a highly effective carrier for strontium ions in PVC membrane electrodes.
- The developed electrode offers a reliable and sensitive method for strontium ion determination.
- The sensor's performance makes it suitable for applications such as potentiometric titration of carbonate ions.
