Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies01:06

Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies

Virtual work is a powerful method used to solve problems involving several connected rigid bodies. When the system is in equilibrium, virtual work is zero. This allows the calculation of the resulting forces when a system undergoes a virtual displacement. When attempting to analyze such a system, first, use a free-body diagram, where an independent coordinate represents the configuration of the links, and mark its deflected position resulting from the positive virtual displacement.

Virtual Work01:20

Virtual Work

The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero.
In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...

Social Foundations of Self IV: Self in Digital Communication

Since the early 2000s, computer-mediated communication (CMC) has grown rapidly, playing a crucial role in self-development. A key distinction between CMC and real-life interactions is the lack of a physically present partner. This absence makes non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and paralinguistic signals unavailable in CMC platforms like email, instant messaging, or social media. The lack of these cues can create ambiguity and complicate how feedback is interpreted.The...
Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).
Social Exchange Theory01:26

Social Exchange Theory

As formulated by John Thibaut and Harold Kelley, Social Exchange Theory explains human relationships as economic-like exchanges that maximize rewards and minimize costs. This theory suggests that individuals engage in relationships to gain benefits and reduce burdens, similar to economic transactions. It has been widely applied to various types of relationships, including romantic, professional, and social interactions.Rewards and Costs in RelationshipsRelationship rewards include emotional...
Collisions in Multiple Dimensions: Introduction01:05

Collisions in Multiple Dimensions: Introduction

It is far more common for collisions to occur in two dimensions; that is, the initial velocity vectors are neither parallel nor antiparallel to each other. Let's see what complications arise from this. The first idea is that momentum is a vector. Like all vectors, it can be expressed as a sum of perpendicular components (usually, though not always, an x-component and a y-component, and a z-component if necessary). Thus, when the statement of conservation of momentum is written for a problem,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Adolescent social development is increasingly influenced by online environments.
  • The impact of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) on social skills requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of playing World of Warcraft (WoW) on adolescent social interaction and competence.
  • To analyze the psychosocial aspects of in-game social interactions and their relationship to out-game connections.

Main Methods:

  • Integration of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Utilizing conversation analysis to examine in-game dialogue.
  • Employing social network analysis (SNA) to map social connections within WoW.

Main Results:

  • In-game social interactions, particularly conversational exchanges, facilitate a collaborative process.
  • Adolescents collaboratively define identities and strengthen social ties through gameplay.
  • In-game interactions show a reflective connection to out-game relationships and social competence.

Conclusions:

  • Playing World of Warcraft positively influences adolescent social interaction and competence.
  • Conversational dynamics in WoW are crucial for identity and social tie formation.
  • The study highlights the significant psychosocial role of MMORPGs in adolescent development.
