Background:

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old female presented with progressive vision loss and ocular pain three weeks post-implantation of NewIris(®) lenses.
  • Clinical examination revealed decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, and elevated intraocular pressure in both eyes.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced acute endothelial failure, evidenced by a severely reduced corneal endothelial cell count.
  • Despite prompt removal of the implants, significant and irreversible endothelial damage had occurred.

Implications:

  • The NewIris(®) implant poses significant risks, including severe endothelial compromise, unlike established phakic anterior chamber intraocular lenses.
  • This case highlights the potential dangers of cosmetic iris implants and questions their safety and suitability for patients.
