- Ninety-four adult type 1 diabetes patients were screened for celiac disease using anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA).
- Celiac disease diagnosis was confirmed by histology and organ culture.
- Hemocoagulative parameters, metabolic control (HbA1c), and microvascular complications were compared between DM1 patients with and without celiac disease.
Main Results:
- DM1 patients with celiac disease exhibited significantly lower HbA1c, cholesterol, triglycerides, factor VII antigen (FVII:ag), factor VII coagulant activity (FVII:c), and prothrombin degradation fragments (F1+2).
- These patients also showed significantly higher levels of activated protein C (APC).
- No retinal abnormalities or renal damage were observed in DM1 patients with celiac disease.
Conclusions:
- Celiac disease may exert a protective effect against the prothrombotic state commonly observed in type 1 diabetes.
- The presence of celiac disease in DM1 patients is associated with improved metabolic control and a less thrombogenic profile.
