Background:

  • Left ventricular (LV) diverticuli are rare congenital anomalies.
  • Literature suggests a low incidence, often associated with other anomalies and potential complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence, size, and location of left ventricular diverticuli using cardiac dual-source CT.
  • To assess the incidence of LV diverticuli in a patient cohort undergoing DS CTCA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 482 patients who underwent cardiac dual-source computed tomography angiography (DS CTCA).
  • Evaluation of imaging data for the presence, characteristics, and location of LV diverticuli.

Main Results:

  • LV diverticuli were incidentally found in 4.1% of patients (20/482), a higher incidence than previously reported.
  • Diverticuli were most common on the inferoseptal wall (45%) but occurred throughout the LV wall.
  • Multiple diverticuli were present in 30% of affected patients, with varied dimensions. No associated anomalies or complications were observed in the studied group.

Conclusions:

  • Incidental left ventricular diverticuli found in adults via DS CTCA appear to be relatively common and follow a benign clinical course.
  • Conservative management may be appropriate for incidentally detected LV diverticuli in adults.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term prognosis and natural history of LV diverticuli.
