Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Mathematics Education

Background:

  • Multi-digit addition, particularly with carry operations, presents challenges in numerical cognition.
  • Previous studies show increased response latencies and error rates for carry addition problems.
  • The underlying cognitive mechanisms of the carry effect remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cognitive processes underlying the difficulty of multi-digit addition with carry operations.
  • To explore the role of unit and decade digits in the carry effect using eye fixation data.
  • To elucidate the temporal dynamics of carry recognition and execution during addition.

Main Methods:

  • Participants verified multi-digit addition problems.

  • Eye movement behavior, specifically eye fixations, was recorded during verification.
  • Analysis focused on fixation patterns related to unit and decade digits of summands and solutions.
  • Main Results:

    • Eye fixation data indicated a significant role for unit digits in carry operations.
    • Carry need recognition occurs early, following initial unit sum calculation.
    • Carry execution processes are linked to decade digit processing but are less distinct.

    Conclusions:

    • Unit-based calculations and carry recognition/completion are key determinants of carry addition difficulty.
    • Eye movement measures provide valuable insights into the fine-grained nature of numerical-cognitive processes.
    • This research differentiates the cognitive processes involved in numerical tasks.
