Emerging specialty areas in MR imaging: an initial study

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to analyze magnetic resonance (MR) technologist practice data to determine if MR specialty areas exist.
Method:
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists distributed an MR practice analysis questionnaire to a random sample of 1000 registered MR technologists. Task statements were assessed to determine the type and frequency of procedures performed by MR technologists.
Results:
Of the 121 task statements collected, the author analyzed 78 tasks and found 4 meaningful factors accounting for 47.86% of the total variance. In addition, 3 specialty areas emerged in separate reviews of the tasks listed in each of the 4 factors.
Conclusions:
Using factor analysis to assess the data, vascular/cardiovascular imaging, central nervous system imaging and musculoskeletal imaging were identified as specialty areas.
