Background:

Entrepreneurship research in Spain has evolved significantly since 1977.
Understanding the trajectory and focus of this research is crucial for its future development.

Purpose of the Study:

To review and analyze the body of research on entrepreneurship in Spain from 1977 to 2009.
To identify key characteristics, methodologies, and thematic focuses of Spanish entrepreneurship studies.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive database was created by reviewing 471 scholarly works.
Included are articles from national and international journals, and dissertations completed in Spain.

Main Results:

A strong preference for qualitative methodologies and conceptual contributions.
The entrepreneurial process and micro/small enterprises are dominant research themes.
Spanish research demonstrates potential for distinct international contributions.

Conclusions:

Spanish entrepreneurship research has unique characteristics that could enrich global scholarship.
Challenges in knowledge dissemination and international publication strategies limit its wider impact.
