Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Self-Esteem01:28

Self-Esteem

Self-esteem, a core aspect of psychological well-being, reflects an individual's positive and negative self-evaluation in terms of worth, competence, and overall value. It is both a stable trait and a dynamic process, influenced by experiences and social interactions across the lifespan. While global self-esteem offers a general assessment, research highlights that self-esteem is multidimensional and varies across specific life domains.Domain-Specific Self-EsteemResearchers have delineated...
Cattell's 16 Personality Factors01:24

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the fundamental,...
Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...
Self-Concept01:19

Self-Concept

Self-concept is the cognitive and emotional understanding individuals hold about their identity. It evolves through various developmental stages, beginning in infancy and maturing as children grow. This concept influences how individuals perceive their abilities, interact with others, and manage challenges throughout life.
Infancy and Emerging Recognition
During infancy, self-concept is virtually nonexistent. Babies do not distinguish themselves as separate entities and often mistake their...

Summary

A new self-assessment scale (CFSS) helps measure cognitive functioning in the general population. This tool reveals women report lower cognitive function than men, aiding quality of life assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cognitive functioning is integral to quality of life, yet difficulties are often unrecognized.
  • Limited validated self-report tools exist for assessing cognitive function in non-clinical populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the Cognitive Functioning Self-Assessment Scale (CFSS), a novel self-report instrument.
  • To evaluate the CFSS for measuring individual cognitive functioning in the general population.

Main Methods:

  • The CFSS comprises 18 items rated on a five-point scale.
  • Two hundred eighty-two general practice patients completed the CFSS and a demographic/clinical data form.
  • Exploratory factor analysis (principal component analysis) and internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha) were used.

Main Results:

  • Factor analysis supported a one-dimensional structure for the CFSS.
  • The scale demonstrated good internal reliability (alpha = 0.856).
  • Women reported significantly lower cognitive functioning than men; age, illness, or medication did not show significant differences.

Conclusions:

  • The CFSS is a potentially valuable and promising self-report measure for assessing cognitive functioning in the general population.
  • The findings highlight gender differences in self-perceived cognitive function.
  • Further validation studies are warranted to confirm the CFSS's utility.
