Determining the point of origin (PO) for impact bloodstains is crucial. This study found that selecting large, elliptical bloodstains near the source improves the accuracy of computer-based PO estimation in bloodstain pattern analysis.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Science
- Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Background:
- Accurate determination of the point of origin (PO) is essential in bloodstain pattern analysis for reconstructing events.
- Current methods for PO estimation include the stringing method, tangent method, and computer programs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the accuracy of two computer programs for estimating the PO of impact bloodstains.
- To identify bloodstain characteristics that influence the deviation in PO estimation.
Main Methods:
- Impact bloodstain patterns were generated using a modified mouse trap.
- The PO was calculated using two distinct computer programs.
- Characteristics of individual bloodstains (size, shape, location) were analyzed for their influence on PO accuracy.
Main Results:
- The study identified specific bloodstain characteristics that improve PO estimation accuracy.
- Larger bloodstains (width >1.5 mm) and elliptical shapes were found to be more reliable indicators.
- Considering bloodstains from multiple surfaces can enhance the precision of PO determination.
Conclusions:
- Recommendations are provided to improve the accuracy of PO determination for impact patterns.
- Selecting appropriate bloodstains for analysis is key to refining PO estimations.
- The findings offer practical guidance for forensic analysts utilizing computer-assisted PO determination.
