A self-help book using cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia significantly improved sleep and reduced medication use compared to standard sleep hygiene advice. Sleep hygiene advice alone increased sleep medication dependence, warranting caution.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Sleep Medicine
- Psychology
Background:
- Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder affecting millions globally.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective treatment.
- Accessible, low-threshold interventions are needed for insomnia management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy of a self-help CBT-I book versus standard sleep hygiene advice for insomnia.
- To evaluate effects on sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and sleep medication use.
- To assess long-term outcomes at a three-month follow-up.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 155 participants with insomnia.
- Recruitment via newspaper advertisements and assessment through a web-based survey.
- Validated questionnaires measured sleep, anxiety, depression, and medication use.
Main Results:
- The self-help CBT-I book group showed significantly better sleep questionnaire scores than the sleep hygiene group.
- Sleep medication use decreased in the self-help book group but increased in the sleep hygiene group.
- The self-help book improved sleep and depression scores; sleep hygiene advice showed mixed results and increased medication use.
Conclusions:
- A self-help CBT-I book is an effective, low-cost intervention for insomnia.
- Sleep hygiene advice, when used alone, may increase sleep medication dependence.
- Self-help CBT-I offers a viable alternative to traditional therapies for insomnia.
