Background:

  • Perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) are used in complex retinal detachment repair.
  • Retained submacular PFCL can occur postoperatively.
  • Understanding outcomes of retained submacular PFCL is crucial.

Observation:

  • A retrospective case series reviewed 8 eyes with retained submacular PFCL.
  • Most cases involved observation without surgery (7/8 eyes).
  • One eye underwent surgical PFCL removal due to juxtafoveal location and macular edema.

Findings:

  • Submacular PFCL remained stable in 7 eyes for up to 9 years (mean 4.4 years).
  • Visual acuity improved or remained stable in all observed eyes.
  • Surgical removal in one eye led to improved visual acuity (20/200 to 20/125) and reduced macular edema.

Implications:

  • Submacular PFCL may not necessitate immediate intervention and can be stable.
  • Surgical PFCL removal is a viable option for patients experiencing significant visual impairment.
  • Further research can optimize management strategies for retained submacular PFCL.
