Background:

  • Demarcation laser photocoagulation (DLP) is an underutilized treatment for limited retinal detachments.
  • This study evaluates the outcomes of DLP in a cohort of patients at a single academic center.

Observation:

  • The study reviewed 10 eyes of 10 patients treated with DLP.
  • Five patients were asymptomatic, while five presented with symptomatic retinal detachment.
  • Follow-up ranged from 1 to 8 years.

Findings:

  • Asymptomatic patients showed stable retinal detachment without progression.
  • In symptomatic patients, retinal detachment progressed through the laser demarcation in the majority.
  • Two symptomatic patients required subsequent vitreoretinal surgery, with successful retinal reattachment.

Implications:

  • DLP may be a viable option for stabilizing retinal detachments in asymptomatic individuals.
  • For symptomatic retinal detachments, DLP's efficacy appears limited, with a high rate of progression.
  • Further research is needed to define the optimal role of DLP in managing retinal detachments.
