Summary

Most systemic sclerosis patients have antireticulin antibodies, primarily IgG and IgA classes. These autoantibodies targeting collagen-like fibers may play a role in disease development, potentially originating from mucosal immune responses.

  • Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and immunoglobulin (Ig) classes of antireticulin antibodies in systemic sclerosis patients.
  • To investigate the IgG subclasses of antireticulin antibodies.

Main Methods:

  • Indirect immunofluorescence on unfixed rodent tissue was used.
  • Serum samples from 32 systemic sclerosis patients were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Antireticulin antibody was detected in 69% of patients.
  • The antibodies were predominantly of the IgG class (86%), followed by IgA (59%) and IgM (27%).
