Photodynamic therapy (PDT) shows promise for treating denture stomatitis (DS). While four of five patients experienced resolution, two cases recurred, suggesting PDT as a potential alternative therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Photomedicine

Background:

  • Denture stomatitis (DS) is a common oral condition often caused by Candida species.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is recognized for its effectiveness against Candida in laboratory and animal studies.
  • Clinical trials investigating PDT for DS have been limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating denture stomatitis (DS).
  • To assess clinical resolution and microbial changes in patients with DS undergoing PDT.

Main Methods:

  • Five patients diagnosed with DS received six PDT sessions over 15 days.
  • Treatment involved spraying dentures and palates with Photogem followed by irradiation with a 455 nm LED light source.
  • Clinical photographs and Candida cultures were taken at baseline, during treatment, and at follow-up (days 15, 30, 60).

Main Results:

  • Four out of five patients achieved clinical resolution of DS, indicated by reduced inflammation.
  • One patient showed partial improvement in palatal inflammation.
  • Two patients experienced recurrence of DS during the 60-day follow-up period.

Conclusions:

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) presents a potential alternative treatment option for denture stomatitis (DS).
  • Further research and larger clinical trials are warranted to establish optimal PDT protocols and long-term efficacy for DS.
