    Area of Science:

    • Biomaterials Science
    • Nephrology
    • Polymer Chemistry

    Background:

    • Polyethersulfone (PES) has been a standard material for synthetic dialysis membranes for over ten years.
    • Recent advancements include a new generation of high-performance PES membranes produced via an advanced spinning process.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the performance of novel high-performance polyethersulfone membranes in synthetic dialysis applications.
    • To assess their efficiency, biocompatibility, and safety for various dialysis procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • Characterization of the new membranes focusing on pore size distribution and permselectivity.
    • Evaluation of middle molecule removal and albumin permeability.
    • Assessment of pyrogen retention capabilities and biocompatibility.

    Main Results:

    • The innovative membranes exhibit a more homogenous and dense pore size distribution, leading to improved permselectivity.
    • Outstanding middle molecule removal was achieved with minimal albumin loss.
    • Excellent biocompatibility and pyrogen retention comparable to leading references were demonstrated.

    Conclusions:

    • High-performance polyethersulfone membranes represent a significant advancement in synthetic dialysis technology.
    • These membranes are highly efficient, biocompatible, safe, and suitable for all current dialysis procedures.
