Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term impact of the City of Hope Pain Resource Nurse (PRN) Training Course on nursing pain management practice.
  • To assess the application and dissemination of learned pain management content.
  • To measure changes in nurses' confidence and practice behavior post-training.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was administered to Registered Nurses (RNs) who attended the PRN course between 2002-2010.
  • The survey compared pre- and post-training nursing practices regarding pain management.
  • Data were collected from 180 respondents (23% of 783 invited participants).

Main Results:

  • Respondents reported significant improvements in comfort with basic opioid administration (p < .001).
  • Pain assessment content was applied to practice by 97% of respondents.
  • 89% of nurses disseminated course content within their institutions, and relaxation was the most common non-drug intervention.

Conclusions:

  • The PRN Training Course demonstrated a significant long-term positive impact on nursing pain management practices.
  • Nurses reported increased confidence and improved practice behavior attributed to the course content.
  • The training effectively enhanced nurses' skills in pain assessment and opioid administration, promoting knowledge dissemination.
