Summary

The Actical monitor accurately measures children's steps, with waist placement performing better for faster walking and ankle placement for slower paces. This step-counting device shows good validity for population studies.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric physical activity monitoring
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Exercise science

Background:

  • Accurate measurement of physical activity is crucial for understanding children's health.
  • Wearable step counters are widely used but require validation in pediatric populations.
  • Actical monitors are commonly employed for step-counting in research settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the criterion validity of the Actical step-counting monitor in children.
  • To compare the accuracy of Actical placement at the ankle versus the waist.
  • To assess the monitor's performance across different walking speeds and activities.

Main Methods:

  • Children (n=19) wore two synchronized Actical monitors, one on the ankle (AA) and one on the waist (AW).

  • Participants engaged in treadmill walking at various speeds.
  • Observed video recordings (OVR) served as the criterion measure for step counts.
  • Main Results:

    • Both waist (AW) and ankle (AA) placements demonstrated high correlations with OVR (r = .927 and r = .854, respectively).
    • Actical step counts were significantly lower than OVR for both placements.
    • AW provided more accurate estimates at higher step rates (>130 steps/min), while AA was better for slow walking and non-treadmill activities.

    Conclusions:

    • The Actical monitor exhibits good criterion validity for measuring steps in children.
    • Placement location (waist vs. ankle) influences accuracy depending on activity intensity.
    • The Actical monitor is a valid tool for population-based studies assessing children's physical activity.
