Abstract:
Studies indicate that by 2030, more than 67 million people in the United States will have osteoarthritis. Of these, many will have osteoarthritis in weight-bearing joints such as the knees. Currently, people rely on behavioral modifications, medication, and surgery to reduce pain and to improve mobility. However, with recent focus on osteoarthritis prevention and articular cartilage restoration, other options may become available. Finding new ways to prevent and treat osteoarthritis include contributions from researchers, clinicians, physical therapists, materials and computer scientists, bioengineers, and medical imaging professionals. Radiography and magnetic resonance imaging can play an important role in helping clinicians diagnose, treat, and monitor patients with osteoarthritis.
