Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Soft Tissue Tumors

Background:

  • Myxoid and round cell liposarcoma is a liposarcoma variant with potential for tumor progression.
  • Liposarcomas typically arise in deep soft tissues and are rarely seen by dermatologists.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old male presented with a painful, skin-colored subcutaneous mass on his left flank, present for two months.
  • Computed tomography showed a well-defined subcutaneous tumor without lymphadenopathy.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed a non-encapsulated, nodular tumor composed of atypical lipoblasts in a myxoid stroma, primitive mesenchymal cells, and chicken-wire capillaries.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed as myxoid and round cell liposarcoma.

  • This case highlights the importance of considering liposarcoma in the differential diagnosis of rapidly growing subcutaneous tumors.
  • Dermatologists should be aware of liposarcoma, despite its rarity in superficial locations, for prompt patient management.
