Summary

Atopy is associated with non-specific bronchial responsiveness (NSBR), but this link is weak and depends on how atopy is defined. Atopy should not be used as a marker for NSBR in asthma research.

Background:

  • Atopy is a known risk factor for asthma development, particularly in children and occupational settings.
  • The relationship between atopy and non-specific bronchial responsiveness (NSBR) in asthma is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between atopy and NSBR in siblings of individuals with atopic asthma.
  • To determine if atopy is a reliable predictor of NSBR.
  • To examine how different definitions of atopy affect its association with NSBR.

  • Evaluated 59 siblings of probands with atopic asthma.
  • Assessed atopy using skin prick tests and serum total IgE levels.
