Background:

The Gambling Functional Assessment (GFA) was developed to identify maintaining consequences of gambling behavior.
Previous psychometric evaluations indicated a need for improvement in the GFA's properties.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the internal consistency and temporal reliability of the Gambling Functional Assessment-Revised (GFA-R).

Main Methods:

The GFA-R was administered to 1,060 undergraduate students.
Temporal reliability was assessed via re-administration at 4 and 12 weeks.
The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) was used for comparative temporal reliability analysis.

Main Results:

Internal consistency measures for the GFA-R were good to excellent, even after excluding non-gamblers.
Temporal stability was generally very good.
A slight exception in temporal stability was noted for the 'escape' consequence at the 12-week interval.

Conclusions:

The Gambling Functional Assessment-Revised demonstrates strong psychometric properties.
The GFA-R is a potentially valuable instrument for clinicians and researchers examining the underlying reasons for gambling behavior.
