Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis (DIV) is an uncommon condition causing intractable vaginitis and dyspareunia.
  • Cytological findings resemble atrophic vaginitis but can occur with normal ovarian function.
  • Vaginal synechiae and stenosis are potential complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the literature on desquamative inflammatory vaginitis.
  • To discuss its association with lichen planus.
  • To highlight the challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review.
  • Analysis of cytological changes.
  • Discussion of treatment responses and potential associations.

Main Results:

  • DIV presents with severe symptoms, often unresponsive to treatment.
  • Steroid therapy shows some efficacy, but treatment remains unsatisfactory.
  • Association with oral and genital lichen planus noted in some cases.

Conclusions:

  • The etiology and natural history of DIV are largely unknown.
  • Insufficient evidence exists to classify DIV as a single entity.
  • The incidence of DIV may be underestimated, necessitating further research.
