Summary

Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis (DIV) is an uncommon cause of severe vaginitis and painful intercourse. Treatment remains challenging, and its exact cause and prevalence are still largely unknown.

Background:

Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis (DIV) is an uncommon condition causing intractable vaginitis and dyspareunia.
Cytological findings resemble atrophic vaginitis but can occur with normal ovarian function.
Vaginal synechiae and stenosis are potential complications.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the literature on desquamative inflammatory vaginitis.
To discuss its association with lichen planus.
To highlight the challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

Main Methods:

Literature review.
Analysis of cytological changes.
Discussion of treatment responses and potential associations.

Main Results:

DIV presents with severe symptoms, often unresponsive to treatment.
Steroid therapy shows some efficacy, but treatment remains unsatisfactory.
Association with oral and genital lichen planus noted in some cases.

Conclusions:

The etiology and natural history of DIV are largely unknown.
Insufficient evidence exists to classify DIV as a single entity.
